Alternative Roots Ensemble

Alternative Roots Ensemble

**Note, due to the MLK holiday on January 20, this class will begin on Monday, January 27.

Open to all instruments. This class will explore the music of modern bands that take roots music in new directions. We'll explore the music of bands like The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Wilco, and others. Designed for students who want to learn how to use acoustic instrumentation in new and varied ways that draw heavily on traditional forms of music but take it in new and interesting directions incorporating ideas from pop, rock and folk music. We'll learn how to create arrangements with a number of different instruments in new and interesting ways, and using the examples of some of today's most popular bands, how to play this kind of music with other people in jam sessions and band settings. The class will focus on the basics of playing together through the examples of these bands. Students will learn arrangements, back up playing, lead playing, and when not to play, and what sets this kind of music apart from more traditional jam settings. We'll also look at vocal harmonies: how they work and how to use them. We'll learn a number of songs suggested by me and the students and students will be encouraged to bring in selections for the class to study and learn.
